2. Computation Errors:
A student doesn't have basic facts memorized (+, -, X, or division)
Solution: Study your flash cards! Understanding and memorization are the focus of Grades K-3. Your beginning 4th grader should know their addition and subtraction facts as well as they recognize a friend. This should be almost instantly, without any calculation, counting, etc.
By year's end, the 4th grade student should not only know their addition and subtraction facts by heart, but also their multiplication facts.

Solving Word Problems
Solving word problems takes a little patience and looking for the key words that tell you which operation (+,-, x, division) to do. Sometimes there will be multiple steps.
"Three dogs are playing & 5 more join them. How many are there now?"
I have the students use a method called TIPS
Thought - In this step, highlight key words that suggest which operation and write the operation sign (+, -, x, division) right next to the T (in TIPS)
Information - write the numbers given that are related to the problem
Plan - simply combine the numbers with the operation sign (+, -, x, division)
Solution - solve it and write the answer
Back to the problem: "Three dogs are playing and 5 more join them. How many are there now?"
T +, Highlight words JOIN THEM in word problem which indicate +
I 5, 3
P 5 + 3
